Slim Metrix Side Effects: Stomach, Blood Sugar and Interactions

Written and reviewed by the Slim Metrix Editorial DeskLast updated 8 min read
Quick answer

The most likely Slim Metrix side effects are stomach upset from berberine and heartburn from cayenne.

Ask a doctor first if you take diabetes drugs, metformin, cyclosporine or several prescriptions, since five ingredients may lower blood sugar. Green tea extract has rare liver reports. It is not for pregnancy, breastfeeding or under 18s.

Check if Slim Metrix fits you before ordering.

Overview

What are the most common Slim Metrix side effects?

A quick map first. The sections below go through each ingredient in turn.

The most likely Slim Metrix side effects are mild stomach problems from berberine and heartburn from cayenne. The more serious risks are drug interactions and low blood sugar in people who take diabetes medicine.

The table links each effect to the ingredient behind it. Because eight ingredients share a 276 mg blend, each one is present in a modest amount. Modest is not zero, so read the rows that fit your health and your medicines.

Berberine

Berberine in Slim Metrix: stomach effects and drug interactions

The ingredient with the most side-effect data, and the most interactions.

Yellow roots and yellow powder on a wooden board
Berberine is the yellow compound in plants such as barberry and goldenseal. This photo is illustrative.

Berberine's main side effects are in the gut: nausea, cramps, gas, constipation and diarrhea (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Trials at 0.5–1.5 g a day reported mostly these GI effects (Dong et al., 2012). The blend holds far less than that, so effects should be milder, but sensitive people may still notice them.

Drug interactions are the bigger issue. Goldenseal, a berberine-rich herb, changed how the body handled metformin and many other drugs (NCCIH, Goldenseal). Berberine slows some liver enzymes, called CYP enzymes, that clear medicines from the body. When they slow down, drug levels can climb.

  • Metformin and other diabetes drugs: blood sugar may fall too low
  • Cyclosporine: a transplant drug whose level can rise with berberine
  • Drugs cleared by CYP enzymes: many heart, cholesterol, seizure, mood and blood-thinning medicines
  • Any daily prescription: ask a pharmacist to check it against berberine
Who should skip it

Who should not take Slim Metrix?

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Slim Metrix. NCCIH warns that berberine may be unsafe in pregnancy and while breastfeeding (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Berberine can pass to a baby and may harm a newborn.

The label is for adults 18 and over. Beyond that, some groups need a doctor's go-ahead first.

  • Children and teens under 18
  • Anyone pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding
  • People taking insulin or diabetes pills
  • People with liver disease, or a past reaction to green tea extract
  • People on transplant drugs, blood thinners or thyroid medicine
  • Anyone with surgery planned in the next two weeks
Blood sugar

Slim Metrix and diabetes medicine: the blood-sugar stack

The brand claims Slim Metrix helps maintain healthy blood sugar already within normal range. With medicine, that pull needs watching.

Five Slim Metrix ingredients that may lower blood sugar

IngredientEffect seen in researchSource
BerberineLowered glucose at 0.5–1.5 g a dayDong et al., 2012
Chromium (50 mcg)May add to diabetes medicinesNIH ODS, Chromium
Alpha lipoic acidMay add a low-blood-sugar risk with insulin or pillsLinus Pauling Institute, Lipoic acid
Korean ginsengFasting glucose fell modestlyShishtar et al., 2014
Banaba (corosolic acid)Blood sugar fell in short human studiesStohs et al., 2012

Each of these ingredients is in the capsule at a modest amount. Together they point the same way. Added to insulin, sulfonylureas or metformin, the combined pull could tip blood sugar too low, even if each piece is small.

Liver

Can the green tea extract in Slim Metrix affect the liver?

A rare risk, but the one that most needs you to know the warning signs.

Green tea leaves and matcha-style green powder in a wooden bowl
Green tea leaves and powder. Brewed tea is not the concern; concentrated extracts in pills are.

Rarely, yes. LiverTox calls concentrated green tea extract a well-established cause of liver injury, with EGCG as the likely culprit and onset usually within 1–6 months (LiverTox, Green tea). NCCIH notes the cases mostly involve extracts in capsule or tablet form (NCCIH, Green tea).

Dose matters. EFSA found that 800 mg or more of EGCG a day as a supplement raised liver enzymes (EFSA, 2018). Slim Metrix is far below that: the whole blend is 276 mg, and the extract is 50% EGCG. The exact amount is hidden, though, so you cannot add it up against other green tea products you use.

  • Do not stack it with other green tea extract or “fat burner” capsules
  • Skip it if you have liver disease, unless your doctor agrees

Other ingredients

Cayenne, ginseng and milk thistle in Slim Metrix: smaller cautions

Less serious, but worth knowing before your first capsule.

Cayenne: heartburn

Cayenne at 40,000 heat units can cause warmth, stomach burning or heartburn. Take the capsule with food, and stop if you have reflux flares.

Ginseng: sleep

Insomnia is the most common side effect of Asian ginseng (NCCIH, Asian ginseng). Morning use helps. Ask your doctor if you take blood thinners such as warfarin.

Milk thistle: digestion

Milk thistle can cause bloating, nausea and gas (NCCIH, Milk thistle). People allergic to ragweed or daisies may react to it.

Resveratrol: low exposure

Very little resveratrol reaches the blood unchanged (Walle et al., 2004). The amount in one capsule is small, so effects are unlikely.

Minerals

Zinc and chromium in Slim Metrix: absorption and totals

The two minerals in Slim Metrix with amounts on the label

MineralPer capsuleWhat to watch
Zinc5.5 mg (50% DV)Binds quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics; take the antibiotic 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after zinc. Adult upper limit is 40 mg a day from all sources (NIH ODS, Zinc).
Chromium50 mcg (about 143% of today's DV)May lower levothyroxine absorption; space the two apart. May add to diabetes medicines (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Count zinc from every source. A multivitamin, a cold lozenge and fortified cereal can each add several milligrams. Staying under 40 mg a day in total avoids nausea and, over time, low copper levels.

Chromium's label shows 41.67% DV, based on an older reference. Against today's 35 mcg Daily Value, 50 mcg is about 143% (FDA, Daily Values). That is still a small amount next to the 200–1,000 mcg used in weight trials.

When to stop

When to stop Slim Metrix and call a doctor

Most people will notice nothing. These signs mean stop first and ask questions after.

Shaking, sweating, dizziness or confusion. Take some sugar, then call your doctor, above all if you use diabetes medicine.

  3. Allergic reaction

Hives, swelling of the face or lips, or trouble breathing. Get emergency help right away.

  4. Stomach or sleep problems that last

If cramps, diarrhea, heartburn or poor sleep go on past a week, stop and talk to your doctor.

Your checklist

What to ask your pharmacist before starting Slim Metrix

A five-minute talk with a pharmacist covers most of the risks on this page. Bring the bottle, or a photo of the label, and your medicine list.

  1. Does berberine interact with any of my medicines?
  2. Could the blood-sugar ingredients add to my diabetes medicine?
  3. How far apart should I take it from my antibiotic or thyroid pill?
  4. Is green tea extract safe with my liver history?
  5. How much zinc do I already get from other supplements?

The full ingredient list, with research doses, is on the Slim Metrix ingredients page. †These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

FAQ

Slim Metrix side effects questions

What is the most common Slim Metrix side effect?

Stomach upset is the most likely one. Berberine can cause nausea, cramps, gas, constipation or diarrhea. Taking the capsule with breakfast may help.

Can Slim Metrix cause low blood sugar?

It can add to the effect of diabetes medicine. Five of its ingredients may lower blood sugar. People who use insulin or diabetes pills should ask their doctor before starting.

Is Slim Metrix bad for the liver?

Liver injury is rare. It has been linked to concentrated green tea extract, usually at larger doses. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or pain under the right ribs.

Can I take Slim Metrix with metformin?

Only if your doctor agrees. A berberine-rich herb changed how the body handled metformin in a study. Berberine also lowers blood sugar, which can add to metformin's effect.

Can Slim Metrix keep me awake?

It might. Trouble sleeping is the most common side effect of Asian ginseng, and green tea extract may carry some caffeine. Take the capsule in the morning, as the label suggests.

Can I take Slim Metrix with my thyroid medicine?

Ask your pharmacist how to space them. Chromium may reduce how much levothyroxine the body takes in. A gap of several hours is the usual advice.

Should I stop Slim Metrix before surgery?

Tell your surgeon you take it. Ginseng may affect blood thinners, and several ingredients affect blood sugar. Your care team may ask you to pause it for a while before and after.
